Nursery Calves
From milk replacer through the first solid feed, nursery-stage decisions set the trajectory for everything that follows.
Milk Replacer
One size does not fit all.
The ideal milk replacer composition depends on a number of factors, including sex, breed, ambient temperature, and the objectives of the calf operation.
Are you growing bulls or heifers?
Bulls
Feed for lowest cost of gain.
Heifers
Do you have a vested interest when the heifers freshen? If yes, an intensified program may be appropriate if management is capable. If no, or management isn’t capable of an intensified program, feeding may be approached more like the bull program.

- Are you feeding dairy calves or crossbred calves?
- Is it summer or winter?
- What is the target rate of gain?
- Do you own the calves, or are you feeding them for someone else?
- Do you get paid based on live weight gain?
